Local SEO for Service Businesses: What Actually Moves the Needle

If you sell to a defined geographic area, local SEO is where the return is. Most of the advice online is padded — this is the short list, ranked by effect against effort.

1. Google Business Profile, completed properly

This is the single biggest lever and most businesses claim it, fill in half the fields and never look at it again. Complete every field, choose the primary category precisely, add real photos, and post to it periodically. It feeds the map pack, which is where local intent converts.

2. Reviews, requested systematically

  • Ask every satisfied customer, not just the delighted ones
  • Automate the request so it does not depend on remembering
  • Reply to every review, including the negative ones, without defensiveness
  • Never buy or incentivise reviews — the risk is not worth it

Review volume and recency both matter. A steady trickle beats a burst followed by two years of silence.

3. One page per service, per location

If you offer three services across four towns, that is potentially twelve pages — but only if each one is genuinely substantive. Twelve thin pages with the town name swapped is a spam pattern and will be treated as one.

Write about the actual work in that area: local considerations, real projects, specifics that could only be written by someone who works there.

4. Consistent NAP everywhere

Name, address and phone number identical across your website, Google Business Profile and every directory you appear in. Inconsistency here quietly undermines everything else, and it is tedious rather than difficult to fix.

5. LocalBusiness schema

Structured data telling search engines your business type, service area, opening hours and contact details. It is a small technical job that removes ambiguity, and most competitors have not done it.

What to ignore

  • Bulk citation submission services — a handful of quality directories beats hundreds of junk ones
  • Keyword stuffing your town name into every heading
  • Doorway pages for towns you do not actually serve
  • Anyone guaranteeing a map pack position

Measuring it

Track calls and direction requests in Google Business Profile, and organic conversions by landing page in analytics. Rankings are a proxy; enquiries are the thing. A page ranking third that produces calls beats a page ranking first that does not.
