The most expensive redesign is the one that looks better and ranks worse. It happens constantly and the causes are boring, repeatable and entirely preventable.
Crawl the existing site and export every URL. Pull the pages currently earning organic traffic and rankings from Search Console. Rank them. That list is now a protected asset — it defines what the redesign must not break.
This step takes a few hours and prevents the entire category of problem. It is skipped on most redesigns.
If a URL changes, it needs a 301 to the closest equivalent page. Redirecting everything to the homepage is not a redirect strategy — Google treats bulk homepage redirects as soft 404s and the link equity evaporates.
Build the map as a spreadsheet: old URL, new URL, done. Test every row after launch.
Designers reasonably want less text. But a page ranking for a valuable term is ranking partly because it answers the question thoroughly. Cutting eight hundred words to four hundred for visual balance is a decision with a traffic cost.
Restructure instead: accordions, tabs, better subheadings. Keep the substance, improve the presentation.
Some fluctuation is normal while Google re-crawls and re-evaluates. Watch Search Console for coverage errors and ranking movement weekly.
A well-executed redesign dips slightly and recovers within four to eight weeks, usually to a better position than before because the structure improved. A badly executed one does not recover on its own — and the longer the diagnosis waits, the more expensive it gets.
